Weather, Water, Climate for socio-economic development
The mandate of the KMD is to provide timely early warning weather and climate information for safety of life, protection of property and conservation of the natural environment. This mandate is anchored on Executive Orders on the structure and organization of the Government of Kenya and the World Meteorological Organization Convention. The Convention also recognizes the NMHSs to be the single and authoritative voice and source on matters of severe weather and extreme climate events among WMO’s member states.

Dr. David Gikungu

Dr. David Gikungu is the current Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department and the Permanent Representative of Kenya with the World Meteorological Organization. Dr. Gikungu is a seasoned meteorologist who has vast experience in the science of meteorology and has held several managerial positions in the Department from 1985. Dr. Gikungu holds a PhD in Disaster Management and Sustainable Development from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. He is also a trained Biometeorologist, and is the national focal point for climate and health at KMD.
As Director, he is responsible for provision of the overall strategic leadership nationally and internationally, coordinating various technical, administrative, financial and scientific programs for the entire Department’s planning, implementation and execution to achieve the mandate of the Department and the national development agenda as well as provision of weather and climate advisory services to all Government Ministries for decision and policy making.

Benard Agesa Chanzu

A Master of Science (MSc) degree in Water Resources from UNESCO-IHE Delft, the Netherlands and Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.
He has over 25 years of work experience at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) having worked at various technical sections in the Department. He has risen through ranks to a position of Deputy Director. He is currently in charge of the forecasting branch of the department.

Edward M. Muriuki

The Deputy Director joined KMD in 1991. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Water Resources Engineering, Post Graduate Diploma in Operational Hydrology and a BSc In Meteorology.
He has worked in various sections; National Meteorological Centre, JKIA, Institute for Meteorological Training and Research, and Regional Meteorological Services (Coast).
